Dr Eluzai Abe Hakim

Dr Eluzai Hakim founded the Southern Sudan Medical Bulletin (later renamed the South Sudan Medical Journal -  SSMJ) in 2008 whilst a Consultant Physician in Rehabilitation and Stroke Medicine at Saint Mary’s Hospital, Isle of Wight, UK. The aim of SSMJ is to improve medical, nursing, pharmacy, and laboratory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and health provision in South Sudan.

In addition to clinical work, Dr Hakim has taught and examined doctors at undergraduate and postgraduate level. He supervised and assessed trainees on placement to the Stroke Unit and medical wards, and examined final year medical students at the University of Southampton Medical School. On retirement in 2015, he was a joint recipient of the “Educator of the year” at St. Mary’s Hospital.

He continues to examine on the Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills of the UK Royal College of Physicians, is Associate Editor of SSMJ, is International Adviser to the Royal College of Physicians of London on South Sudan and sits on the Executive Committee of the Gordon Memorial College Trust Fund, a UK based charity which supports postgraduate training for Sudanese and South Sudanese students. Although retired he keeps updated through CPD.

Dr Richard Gordon Bogle

MSc PhD, FRCP, FESC

Richard Bogle is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist in London with over 20 years’ experience in coronary intervention and cardiovascular medicine. Alongside a busy clinical practice—spanning acute coronary syndromes, complex PCI, intravascular imaging, and contemporary device technologies—he has a long-standing commitment to improving patient outcomes through data-driven quality improvement and rigorous clinical evaluation.

He holds senior leadership roles in postgraduate medical education and workforce development, supporting training quality, standards, and the working lives of resident doctors across large NHS systems. Richard also leads and advises multi-stakeholder programmes that translate clinical innovation into practical service improvement, with interests spanning digital health, simulation and technology-enhanced learning, health inequity, and sustainability in healthcare.

His academic interests include outcomes research using large cardiovascular registries, trial methodology, and pragmatic approaches to evidence generation that can change everyday practice. He regularly contributes to professional education through teaching, mentorship, conference activity, and collaborative projects that connect clinicians, educators, and health system leaders.

Richard is also active in governance and community-facing leadership, bringing the same emphasis on clarity, standards, and accountability to roles outside the catheter laboratory.

Nicki Kindersley 

BA, MA, PhD

Nicki Kindersley is a historian and lecturer at Cardiff University, Wales. Kindersley received a BA from the University of Cambridge and an MA and PhD (2016) from Durham University. She was the Rift Valley Institute project coordinator for the South Sudan National Archive (2012–2013); a visiting fellow at the Max Planck Institute, Halle; and the Harry F. Guggenheim Research Fellow at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge (2017–2020). Her first book New Sudans: Wartime Intellectual Histories in Khartoum was published by Cambridge University Press in 2025. She is co-author with Kuyok Abol Kuyok and Douglas H. Johnson of the first Historical Dictionary of South Sudan (2025).
